SHEARWATER FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES HOLOGRAPHY GRANTS FOR 1996 FT. LAUDERDALE, FLORIDA, DECEMBER 30,1996 -- The Shearwater Foundation announced today that its Board of Directors has awarded a total of $101,000 in grants for its Holography Program this year. The Shearwater Foundation Holography Program provides funding to institutions and associations that contribute to the understanding and appreciation of art holography world-wide. The Foundation also recognizes individual creative excellence within the field by providing an annual Holography Award. This year the award is shared by four artists: Ana MacArthur from the United States Shunsuke Mitamura from Japan August Muth from the United States lkuo Nakamura from Japan The Holography Awards were presented to the above artists at the Art in Holography 2 Symposium in Nottingham, England in September of this year. The Art in Holography 2 Symposium received a grant of $30,000, the final payment of a two year award that marked the single largest grant in the Foundation's history. Organized by Dr. Andrew Pepper, of the U.K. , and Professor Douglas Tyler of the U.S., the Art in Holography 2 Symposium provided an important international gathering of artists, critics, collectors and other professionals working in holography. Urs Fries Of Basel Switzerland received $25,000 as the second part of a two year $35,000 grant to create The Holonet Project, a computer archive for holography on the World Wide Web. The Holonet site provides access to information about the art and Science of holography, the history and technical development of the field and the artists, scientists and business people active in it. Holonet is the first information and research system for holography on the Internet. Georges Dyens of Montreal, Canada received a grant of $6,000 towards the creation of an art holography archive on CD ROM titled "Art and Holography" produced in conjunction with GRAM (Groupe de Recherche en Arts Mediatiques, of Quebec, Canada. The CD includes bibliographic references for the art, science, history, and aesthetics of holography, as well as commentaries by artists and technical data about the medium. |
