FT. LAUDERDALE FLORIDA, DECEMBER 21, 1994 -- The Shearwater Foundation announced today that its Board of Directors has awarded a total of $77,500. in grants within its Holography Program this year. The Holography Program was initiated eight years ago to promote and encourage the art of holography by providing support and recognition to the preeminent artists in the field. Since 1987, the Holography Program has expanded to include support of institutions, associations and activities that contribute to the understanding and appreciation of art holography world-wide.

The Shearwater Foundation Holography Awards were presented to Sydney Dinsmore, Toronto, Canada, Georges Dyens, Montréal, Canada and the team of Vito Orazem and Thomas Luck, Essen, Germany in recognition of their talent and achievement in the field of art holography, Each received a cash grant of ten thousand dollars.

A grant of $10,000. was awarded to The Creative Holography Index for the cost of its final issue. The International Catalog for [art] holography, edited by Dr. Andrew T. Pepper, Department of Media Art, Academy of Media Arts, Cologne, Germany, began publication in late 1992 and plans to cease regular publication with this final issue of Volume Two. The Creative Holography Index is an independent non-commercial quarterly, written in English and published by Monand Press, Bergisch Gladbach, Germany. It is distributed by subscription to more than twenty countries and has become, in a short period of time, an important resource of information and informed criticism about art holography and the artists working in the field.

A grant or $5,000. was awarded to The Photon League of Toronto, Canada for general support of their programs and services. Founded in 1985, The Photon League is a not-for-profit artist-run center devoted to providing an affordable facility for artists to produce work in holography. The association provides lectures, artist-in-residence programs and a mentoring project and publishes a quarterly newsletter which is distributed to its world-wide membership.

A grant of $25,000. was awarded to Sally Weber of Los Angeles, California and Al Razutis of Vancouver, Canada, for the production of a broadcast quality videotape featuring holographic artists from the West Coast of the United States.

"Artists, Light and Holography - Part One: West Coast" will feature statement, interviews and documentation of work by more than a dozen of the 'most prominent holographic artists working in California today. The program will be 60 minutes long and will be distributed on 1/2" VHS format in late summer 1995. Both Weber and Razutis are holographic artists of considerable accomplishment. Razutis is an experienced videographer and will serve as principal camera man for the project.

The exhibition will be organized by California holographic artist Nancy Gorglione, under the auspices of YLEM, an international organization supporting artists using science and technology. The exhibition will feature work in holography, computer controlled fiber optic and LED sculpture, optically coated glass sculpture and similar light-in-space media in an attempt to integrate them into a common aesthetic and foster a more knowledgeable appreciation of these new technologies as art. Gorglione was recently guest editor of LEONARDO magazine's special issue on holography and is an experienced exhibition producer. The exhibition of light art is planned for 1995-1996.
