SHEARWATER FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES HOLOGRAPHY GRANTS FOR 1993 FT. LAUDERDALE, FLORIDA, DECEMBER 31, 1993 -- The Shearwater Foundation announced today that its Board of Directors has awarded a total of $100,500 in grants within its Holography Program this year. The Holography Program was initiated seven years ago to promote and encourage the art of holography by providing support and recognition to the preeminent artists in the field. Since 1987, the Holography Program has been expanded to include support of institutions and activities that contribute to the understanding and appreciation of art holography world-wide. The 1993 Shearwater Holography Awards were presented to artists Mary Harman of Montreal, Quebec, Canada and Ana Maria Nicholson of New York, New York, U.S.A. in recognition of their talent and achievement in the field of art holography. Both artists received a cash grant of ten thousand dollars. Nominations for those awarded were provided, as in previous years, by a confidential group of international advisors. A grant of $30,000 was awarded to The Creative Holography Index for ongoing administrative support. The International Catalog for [art] Holography, edited by Dr. Andrew T. Pepper, Department of Media Art, Academy of Media Arts, Cologne, Germany, began publication in late 1992. Volume One, now completed, contained information about more than thirty artists who work with holography as a creative medium. The Creative Holography Index is an independent non-commercial quarterly, written in English and published by Monand Press, Bergisch Gladbach, Germany. It is distributed by subscription to more than twenty countries. A grant for $20,000 was awarded to the Mississippi Museum of Art, Jackson, Mississippi, U.S.A., to support a travelling exhibition entitled: "New Directions in Holography: The Landscape Reinvented". Organized by the Museum's Chief Curator René Barilleaux, the exhibition will feature some 24 works by six internationally known holographic artists and will travel to half a dozen museums and art galleries in the United States. The exhibition's tour will be administered by Curatorial Assistance, Inc. of Pasadena, California, U.S.A. "New Directions in Holography" will open at the Mississippi Museum of Art in the spring of 1995, accompanied by an illustrated publication. A grant of $20,500 was awarded to the M.I.T. Museum, Cambridge, Massachusetts, U.S.A. to support the salary of a newly appointed Curator, Betsy Connors. The Curator will manage the Museum's recently acquired holography collection ( the former holdings of the Museum of Holography, New York ) creating exhibitions and acquiring new materials to enhance this collection. A grant of $3,000 was awarded to the Society of Photo Optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE) of Bellingham, Washington, U.S.A., to provide travel support to fifteen artists who attended SPIE's Optics Quebec '93 Conference in Quebec City, Quebec, Canada, August 16-20 of this year. The Holographic Imaging and Materials component of this conference, co-chaired by Dr. Marie Andrée Cossette, Director of the Institute Holographique et Médiatique de Quebec, provided sessions of particular interest to art holographers and provided opportunities for many of them to both exhibit their work and present papers. SPIE is a non-profit technical society dedicated to advancing engineering and scientific applications of optical, electro-optical and opto-electronic technologies through its publications, symposia and short courses. A grant of $7,000 was awarded to Lake Forest College, Lake Forest, Illinois, U.S.A., for ten scholarships to artists attending The Fifth International Symposium on Display Holography, which will be held at the college July 18-22 of this year. The Symposium, organized by Dr. Tung H. Jeong, Professor of Physics and Director of the Center for Photonics Studies and International Symposia at Lake Forest College, is a triennial event that began in 1982. "Lake Forest" was the first technical conference designed for both artists and scientists and it remains one of the most widely attended of all professional meetings in the field. |
