SHEARWATER FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES ANNUAL HOLOGRAPHY AWARDS FOR 1991 NEW YORK, NEW YORK, NOVEMBER 9, 1991 -- The Shearwater Foundation, of this city, announced today that its Board of Directors has awarded a total of $82,500. in grants within its Holography Program this year. The Holography Program was initiated five years ago to promote and encourage the art of holography by providing support and recognition to the preeminent artists in the field. Since 1987, the Program has been expanded to include support of institutions and activities that contribute to the understanding and appreciation of art holography worldwide. The 1991 Shearwater Holography Awards were presented to three holographers from Europe, who have furthered the art of holography throughout their individual and collective excellence. The recipients were: Patrick Boyd, England Rudie Berkhout, Holland (living in the USA) Pascal Gauchet, France Patrick Boyd and Pascal Gauchet are representative of the 'new generation' of art holographers. Rudie Berkhout, a Holography Award recipient in 1987 as well, is a recognized pioneer in the field. Each artist received a cash grant of $ 10,000. Nominations for these awards were provided, as in previous years, by a confidential group of international advisors. A $15,000. grant was awarded to the Fourth Annual Symposium on Display Holography, held at Lake Forest College, Lake Forest, Illinois, USA, from July 15-19. The grant provided thirty scholarships to artist, chosen by a committee chaired by Symposium Director Dr. Tung H. Jeong. The Symposium, a triennial event begun in 1982, was the first such conference and art exhibition to involve both artists and scientists working in holography. A $15,000. grant was awarded to The Creative Holography Index, as seed money for its first year of publication. The art magazine is edited by Dr. Andrew T. Pepper, Department of Media Art, Academy of Media Arts, Cologne, Germany. The Index will begin publication in November, 1992, as an independent, not-for-profit publication, written in English and distributed quarterly to paid subscribers. A $22,500. grant was awarded to The Museum of Holography, New York, New York, USA, towards the salary of Curator Sydney Dinsmore, for a second year. According to Museum Director Martha Tomko, Ms. Dinsmore's duties during the grant period include planning and implementation of exhibitions as well as the computerization of Museum archives and collections. |
